Marvel ComicsCaptain America The Art of Captain America The First Avenger [Hardcover]2011 M Author Comics Books Reviews
As a perfect companion piece to this awesome Marvel film, The Art of Captain America proves to be equally as entertaining! When I heard that Joe Johnston was directing this film, I was quite sure that at least the production design would be visually perfect, which it was. After his masterful design work on Star Wars IV, V and VI and the first few Indiana Jones films, I had high hopes. Well, this book does not disappoint! It shows the evolution of Cap's uniforms, the Red Skull and of course all of the weapons and vehicles used by Hydra! I cannot say enough about how many times I go back to this book and still discover more things I missed on my previous look-through. If you are a fan of this film or production design in general, this is a "must-have" book for your library!
First, the movie is awesome. Don't miss it on the big screen. Wonderful adaption of the rich history of one of Marvel's greatest superheroes. This book is also the best book of this genre done by Marvel for its films. Every page is gorgeous, filled with photos and art, the layout and quality is incredible. A beautiful book for fans of either the film or the comic. Make sure you pick this up. I hope Marvel has published it in sufficient quantity unlike the first Iron Man book that disappeared and became ultra expensive for a while. I can't say enough about the colors and tone of this book, the richness of the photos and the content. Every page is a piece of art. Five Stars.
As both an artist and a Captain America fan, I preordered this book as soon as listed it for preorder. I have to say that it's probably one of the most beautiful movie art books that I've seen. From the hard slip cover that boasts a close up of Cap's iconic shield and Hydra's logo on the back, to the many versions of costumes, props, & visuals within, this book will be certain to delight not only fans of the Captain America movie, the 40's era, but also conceptual movie art fans alike. Even the heavy weight feel of the paper speaks QUALITY. For the price, this is definitely a great value and I highly recommend it! It's the center piece of my coffee table books right now! ( needs to update their images of this book. The ONLY conceptual art piece shown right now is 1 of MANY fantastic pieces of art contained within.)
This is another great addition to the Marvel Studios' Movie art books. It follows similar structure to the contents of the previous art books. There's introduction to the background of Captain America as an iconic character from its humble beginning in WW II era comics to the modern incarnations in Marvel's Silver Age comics and eventually to the 2011 film.
The book has one of the simplest yet most beautiful slipcases that I've seen. The close-up images of Captain America's shield and Hydra's logo at the back are stunningly classy. The conceptual designs that make up the majority of the book's contents extend from cool character concepts (Captain America, Red Skull, Bucky Barnes, Peggy Carter, The Howling Commandos, Hydra soldiers, etc.) to the props and settings of the movie at various stages of conception. I notice one of the main conceptual artists involved is the frequent collaborators of the films of Marvel Studios, Ryan Meinerding, who churns out numerous great conceptual images that are consistent with the look of previous movies. I like how Marvel Studios balances out distinctive look of each movie with the continuity of the saga which will culminate in next year's The Avengers. The end of the book is, as in the previous books, packed with the various movie posters that the marketing department comes up with to better sell the movie.
Overall, this is a great addition to the collection of Marvel Studios' films. I just wished they would release a form of The Art of The Incredible Hulk from 2008 which has puzzlingly never seen the light of day.
Anyway, I can't wait for the Art of The Avengers next year.
